Technology's Roadmap to 22/20nm
With unrelenting pressure to do more with less yet make it faster and cheaper, 22/20nm is targeted at the center of the process radar screen for the next generation
Balancing cost, risk, performance and power demands, GLOBALFOUNDRIES is well on its way to delivering 22/20nm technology to customers for product introduction in 2013. GLOBALFOUNDRIES has collaborated with development partners and leading customers around the world to establish the technology specifications to meet a wide range of design requirements across the computing, consumer and communications segments. GLOBALFOUNDRIES focus for the 22/20nm generation is to maintain the same increases in performance, power efficiency and density as when scaling from 45/40nm, and 32/28nm. Planar CMOS allows us to achieve today's and tomorrow's requirements by continually implementing innovative improvements in materials integration, lithography and interconnect technology.
As a partner in the Joint Development Alliance (JDA), GLOBALFOUNDRIES has access to over a decade of research in FinFET technology. The collaborative decision to continue with 2-D planer structures by the entire JDA in 20nm was based not on having access to the FinFET technology but, upon the power, performance and cost parameters that drive the specifications for the industry – from high performance desktop computing to low power, low frequency mobile applications. Once the scalability walls of the 2-D planar CMOS have been reached, GLOBALFOUNDRIES' long standing programs that evaluate options for next-generation transistor structures; including multi-gate FinFETs and ETSOI, will be implemented.
