Sustainable Manufacturing: High Productivity with Low Impact

Sustainable "eco-efficient" manufacturing combines high productivity and low environmental impact. By implementing processes and technologies that reduce energy and water consumption while lowering emissions of greenhouse gases, GLOBALFOUNDRIES continually strives to minimize environmental impact per unit of production.

GLOBALFOUNDRIES' Fab 1 - Dresden Our commitment to global climate protection is demonstrated by our wafer fabrication operations ("Fab1") in Dresden, Germany, which is powered by two highly efficient tri-generation Energy Centers, EVC1 and EVC2. The Energy Centers provide electricity, heating and cooling to the Dresden facilities, achieving thermal efficiencies as high as 89%. Fab1 has applied best practices to minimize emissions of perfluorocompounds (PFCs) since the mid-1990's, and contributed to the World Semiconductor Council exceeding its industry-wide goal to reduce PFC emissions 10% below 1995 levels by 2010.

GLOBALFOUNDRIES Singapore Fabs GLOBALFOUNDRIES' Singapore Fabs have a long-standing reputation for providing a safe work environment and strong environmental performance. In 2012, and again in 2013, all Singapore Fabs received Workplace Safety and Health Performance Silver awards from the Singapore Workplace Safety and Health Council. These Fabs were the first in Singapore to adopt NEWater as feed stock to the ultrapure water production systems. NEWater is Singapore's initiative to reclaim black water for reuse, thus protecting one of this island nation's precious resources.

GLOBALFOUNDRIES' New York Fab Our new 300mm fab in Saratoga County, New York (Fab8) was designed as a "green fab" with the objective of delivering cost-effective and sustainable wafer manufacturing to our customers. We partnered with government agencies like the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and independent think tanks like the Rocky Mountain Institute to integrate energy-efficient features and practices into building design and operations. Our goal is to achieve LEED™ (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design™ ) certification for several projects at the campus. The Admin2 building achieved LEED Gold® certification in April 2014.

Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) is a top priority at GLOBALFOUNDRIES. We implement consistent and rigorous EHS policies, standards, management systems, metrics, external reporting, and compliance assurance, all designed to optimize environmental protection, protect employee safety, health and well-being, and ensure regulatory compliance.

Goals and Performance

GLOBALFOUNDRIES has established goals to drive environmental improvement. These goals are:
  • Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) - Reduce direct and indirect (Scope 1 and 2) emissions by 30% from 2011 to 2016, normalized to manufacturing levels.
  • Electricity consumption - Reduce 10% from 2011 to 2016, normalized to manufacturing levels.
  • Water consumption - Reduce 10% from 2011 to 2016, normalized to manufacturing levels.
  • Regulated waste - Increase recycling rate to 65% in 2014.

EHS Compliance

Through our Global Environmental, Health and Safety policy, we are committed to a “Beyond Compliance” approach, seeking to exceed the requirements of applicable regulations. We implement consistent and rigorous EHS standards, management systems, metrics, external reporting, and compliance assurance programs. These are designed to protect the environment; to protect the safety, health and well-being of our employees, contractors and communities; and to ensure that we meet or exceed regulatory compliance requirements. Our manufacturing sites maintain EHS Management Systems certified to the ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 standards. The current certificates are available here. All sites perform internal reviews as part of their and are routinely inspected by regulatory authorities. No fines or penalties have occurred from 2010 to 2013.
